The reception of the sacrament of Confirmation is necessary for the completion of baptismal grace, for it is by the sacrament of Confirmation that the baptized are more perfectly bound to the Church and are enriched with a special strength of the Holy Spirit. Hence, they are the true witnesses of Jesus Christ, more strictly obliged to spread and defend the faith by word and deed. (CCC. 1285)
Young people, aged twelve or older, prepare and celebrate Confirmation. For us at the Basilica, this preparation, guided by our archdiocesan Standards for Preparing Children and Youth for the Sacraments, supports the role of the family, offers parent/child gatherings and a retreat. We invite the young people to complete ten hours of Service. A Sponsor who is involved throughout the formation process accompanies them. Like First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion, the preparation for Confirmation is a partnership of the home, parish and school. For those young people who do not attend a Catholic school the parish will supply supplementary materials.
