Baptism

Holy Baptism is the basis of the whole Christian life, the gateway to life in the Spirit, and the door which gives access to the other sacraments. Through Baptism we are freed from sin and reborn as children of God; we become members of Christ, are incorporated into the Church and made sharers in her mission (c.f. CCC, 1213)

Baptism of Infants (children under six years of age)

At the Basilica we normally celebrate the sacrament of Baptism once a month on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. The celebration is outside of a Mass. During Lent, we do not have any Baptism celebrations. Parents or guardians should contact our parish office at least one month before the planned Baptism in order to set an appointment to meet with a priest. If not registered members of St. Joseph's Basilica Parish, parents will need to obtain written permission for a Baptism in our church from their home parish.

Usually about two weeks before the day of baptism, we have a Baptismal Preparation Course in our Parish Hall. Parents or guardians are required to complete the Baptismal Preparation Course prior to the baptism of the child. It is highly recommended that Godparents or Sponsors also complete the Baptismal Preparation Course. For more information or to speak to a priest call 780.488.7295

Baptism of Adults

Preparation for adult Baptism takes place within the RCIA process. Adults celebrate the three Sacraments of initiation: Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist. The journey is one of growing discipleship, determined by individual readiness and not the calendar. Everyone's faith journey is unique and we strive to honor that. For more information or to begin the process, we would invite you to contact the Parish Office at 780.488.7295 or basilica.info@caedm.ca

Older Children

Preparation for Baptism for children of catechetical age (seven or older) takes place within the RCIA adapted for children. Please contact the Parish Office for more information.
