St. Joseph's Basilica Catechism

Cathechism School
at the Basilica

Saint Joseph’s Basilica offers a Catechism School for children in grades one to eight. Together with the Catholic School, and you, the parents at home, this program forms the foundation for Sacramental preparation—First Reconciliation, First Communion and Confirmation—as well as faith enrichment for your child. The more your child comes to know God, the more they will love Him through a relationship with Jesus Christ which, we hope and pray, will be the source of a lifelong journey of faith.

In 2016–17, our Catechism School will continue to meet on alternate Sundays from October to May.

Classes are held for one hour following to 10:30 a.m. Mass. That is approximately 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. This allows families to attend Mass together before class.

Volunteers

The Catechism School is only made possible because of the generous support of families and volunteers and so we ask all families to prayerfully consider how you can help. Volunteers are needed in the following roles:

Catechists who work as a team of two or three to teach the sixteen classes that form the foundation of our program. This involves approximately two hours preparation for each class, one orientation/retreat day and two team meetings over the course of the year.

Class assistants who help provide the extra pair of hands and eyes during each class.

Room monitors who help create a safe environment for children to learn in by monitoring our classrooms and bathrooms.

Children's Liturgy

Each Sunday the community gathers in Word and Sacrament. The purpose of the Children’s Liturgy of the Word is to give the children an experience of the Liturgy and God’s Word in a way they can understand. Always remaining faithful to the Scriptures from mass, we facilitate a way for them to respond in prayer, song, gesture, drawing or dramatization. They rejoin the adult community at the Presentation of Gifts. Its purpose is to prepare the children for full and active participation at the mass.

Here at the Basilica, we offer this ministry from October to May at the 10:30 Mass.
